A traveling musician who converts impressions from natural environments into improvised soundscapes

Musical impressionism.

This project largely comes from the artistic tradition of impressionism, in that the artistic process consists of traveling (most often hiking) to a natural setting, taking time to absorb the sensorial experience, and then converting this experience into an improvised, sonic representation. My educational background in cultural anthropology (specifically ethnomusicology) guides many of the musical techniques I employ, such as taqsim from the Arabic/Turkish maqam tradition, alap from the Hindustani Classical tradition of raga manifestation, and rhythmic patterns from Balinese gamelan and African musical diaspora. My interest in medical ethnomusicology also informs the goal of this project, being to provide a therapeutic experience for people and the landscape alike. The musical influences upon this work primarily come from the traditions of minimalism (Terry Riley, Steve Reich), ambient (Brian Eno, Tim Hecker, Laraaji, Fennesz, William Basinski), post-rock (Godspeed You! Black Emperor), and the various world music traditions previously mentioned.
